West Ham climbed to eighth in the Premier League after drawing 0-0 with Manchester City at Upton Park.
It is the first time in 42 matches that City have been involved in a goalless draw, but the Premier League champions’ unbeaten start to the season would have come to an end had the officials not ruled out a fine Kevin Nolan strike for offside. Nolan turned on a Mark Noble floated free-kick and volleyed the ball past Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart, but replays showed that he level with the last defender.
Yossi Benayoun saw a volley hit the bar, while at the other end Mario Balotelli blazed over from close range from a Carlos Tevez cross.
City now face Ajax in the Champions League on Tuesday in a game they must win of they are to have any hope of progressing to the last 16.
