Hamilton sets early pace

by Michelle Fortune , 23 November 2012

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton proved the fastest driver on the Interlagos track during the first free practice session for the Brazilian Grand Prix.

It was a closely fought battle between Hamilton and the two Red Bulls with the Mercedes-bound driver finishing just 0.009seconds ahead of championship leader Sebastian Vettel with Mark Webber third.

Jenson Button clocked the fourth-fastest time of the morning with championship challenger Fernando Alonso completing the top five.

Just over 15 minutes into the session, Hamilton crossed the line in a time of 1:14.131 as he and the rest of the team tested a set of 2013 Pirelli tyres and it was not to be beaten as Vettel got closest to him approaching the half-hour mark.

Alonso will be hoping his Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa can have another big weekend and the Brazilian managed the sixth-fastest time of the morning before spinning at Pinheirhino, which resulted in a yellow flag.

Romain Grosjean was seventh in the Lotus with Paul Di Resta taking eighth for Force India, just ahead of Pastor Maldonado's Williams.

Nico Hulkenberg completed the top ten for Force India.

It was a frustrating session for Kimi Raikkonen as he battled with a engine problem.
