Ferguson considering Lampard swoop

by Michelle Fortune , 08 January 2013

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is considering a move for Frank Lampard in the summer, according to several reports on Tuesday.

Lampard's contract at Chelsea is due to expire at the end of the season and his agent has claimed he will not be offered a new deal under any circumstances, signalling the end of his 12-year stay at Stamford Bridge.

The 34-year-old could follow in the footsteps of David Beckham and head to the Major League Soccer in the United States, but Ferguson is believed to be considering signing the midfielder on a free transfer.

Although he rejected the opportunity to sign Lampard last January, Ferguson has been an admirer of the England international for some time and he would love the opportunity to bring him to Old Trafford given the uncertainty surrounding the futures of Paul Scholes, Darren Fletcher and Anderson.

While there is some concern over Lampard's age, that would not be a major worry of Ferguson, who has shown in the past that he is happy to sign older players with Laurent Blanc and Edwin van der Sar enjoying great success at United later in their careers.
