Roberto Mancini is worried about Jack Rodwell's ability to realise his potential due to his consistent injury problems.
Rodwell has made just two starts since moving to City from Everton last summer as he struggles to overcome a persistent hamstring problem.
It was hoped he would return before Christmas but a setback ruled him out until the new year and his ongoing injuries are become a real worry for Mancini.
"He is getting better and we hope we can recover him in two or three weeks," Mancini said. "He needs to start working with the group and he didn't do this until Thursday.
"I worry because when we bought him we thought he was a good player and then he had these problems with hamstrings.
"We hope we can improve this situation for him. He is young and has quality, he has everything to be a good midfielder."
Rodwell was prevented from playing at Euro 2012 or the London Olympics because of injury but that did not stop City from spending £12million to sign him from Everton.
