Sunderland midfielder Andy Reid will see a specialist after sustaining an Achilles problem.
The 27-year-old Irishman will not be on the flight with his team-mates to the club's pre-season training camp on the Algarve, after sitting out Saturday's 1-0 friendly win at Darlington.
However, Reid, who missed much of the second half of last season through injury, is expected to join the rest of the party in Portugal on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, midfielder Lee Cattermole limped out of the Darlington game with a groin strain and will be assessed on Monday.
Sunderland striker Martyn Waghorn could be on the move to Hull City, as new boss Nigel Pearson is a confirmed fan of the 20-year-old.
Pearson worked with Waghorn during a season-long loan deal at Leicester last year.
"He's certainly a player I've got a lot of admiration for but I don't think it's appropriate to talk about another club's players," Pearson told the Hull Daily Mail.
"Steve Bruce said that he (Waghorn) was a target for everyone in the Championship. People are making the link because of last season.
"All of our business will be done in the correct manner."
