Overton seizes Greenbrier lead

Jeff Overton is four shots clear of the field heading into the third round of the Greenbrier Classic.

Bidding for his first ever PGA Tour title, Overton carded a brilliant eight-under-par 62 to move to 14-under-par through 36 holes, four strokes ahead of Boo Weekley.

Overton has been in superb form of late, recording three top-three finishes in his last six starts, but victory has eluded him. However, he showed his determination to end his losing streak when making three birdies in the first three holes. He reached the turn with three successive birdies and his good form continued as he birdied the par-four first, his tenth of the day.

Back-to-back birdies at four and five saw him increase his lead and he parred his way home to sign for a 62.

"I'm playing well, I don't really know the last time I was playing with this much confidence," Overton told reporters.

"I'm also feeling very comfortable. I've always been a pretty confident golfer - you have to be to get to this level - but I just feel more and more comfortable the more I'm out here and seeing my name on the leaderboard."

Weekley had held the lead for much of the round following birdies at four of his first eight holes but, despite adding another three birdies on his way home, the Ryder Cup star was unable to maintain his lead.

He signed for a seven-under-par to leave him at 10-under for the tournament, one ahead of compatriot's Jimmy Walker and Erik Compton.

"I'm actually feeling pretty good," said Weekley referring to his shoulder problems. "At the John Deere, I started feeling a little better about my game.

"I've lost about 20 pounds of weight and kind of got my shoulder feeling a little better. I'm excited to play again. It feels like I can actually come out and compete and I don't have to take a bunch of Advil."

Australian Aaron Baddeley and Americans Briny Baird, Chris Stroud and Charles Howell III are all six shots off the lead on eight-under, while Jim Furyk is among a group of nine on seven-under.
