Vettel cruises to Hungary pole

by Setanta Staff , 31 July 2010

There will be a familiar look to the grid for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix after Sebastian Vettel cruised to pole position from his Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber.

Red Bull have dominated most qualifying sessions this season and once again they were the team to beat with Vettel going fastest of all around the Hungaroring.

Vettel, who had been fastest in the first two practice sessions for Sunday's race, clocked 1:18.773 midway through Q3 and his time proved too quick for Webber to match and in the end the German was able to cruise around happy in the knowledge that pole was his.

While Webber was unable to better Vettel's time, he did hold off the challenge of Ferrari's Fernando Alonso to ensure an all Red Bull front row.

The Ferraris of Alonso and Felipe Massa will start on the second row and a fascinating battle is expected with the latter unhappy after making way for his team-mate in Germany last weekend.

Lewis Hamilton will start from fifth but his McLaren team-mate Jenson Button missed out on Q3 and will have to make his way from 11th on the grid.

Instead Hamilton will start alongside Mercedes' Nico Rosberg with Vitaly Petrov out-qualifying his Renault team-mate for the first time.

Petrov will start in seventh, one place ahead of Kubica, with Pedro de la Rosa enjoying a brilliant afternoon to qualify in ninth. Williams' Nico Hulkenberg completes the top ten.

There were few surprises in Q1 with Kobayashi, Glock, Trulli, Di Grassi, Senna and Yamamoto all failing to make it through, but there were plenty of shocks in the second part of qualifying.

Michael Schumacher endured another afternoon to forget with the seven-time champion only managing 14th before both Button and Rubens Barrichello dropped out of the top ten in the dying stages.

Barrichello will start alongside Button on the sixth row after a poor session.
