Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill has confirmed that the club have had a bid for Bolton striker Kevin Davies rejected.

Wanderers boss Owen Coyle rejected Martin O'Neill's first approach for the 34-year-old but the Black Cats boss refused to give up without a fight and tabled another bid on Monday morning.

However, Bolton had no hestitation in refusing the offer.

"We have have made an offer to Bolton for him and that has been rejected at the moment. We will see where we stand later on today (Monday)," O'Neill said.

Davies is due to fall out of contract in the summer and Coyle must be tempted to cash in on a player that is struggling to fight his way into the first team on a regular basis.

Coyle insists Davies is still in his plans and will not sell but his resolve looks certain to be tested again before tomorrow's deadline.
