Harry Redknapp has received the backing of those within the sport to succeed Fabio Capello as England manager.
Redknapp has been the hot favourite to become the next England manager for some time and on the day he was cleared of tax evasion the possibility of him taking over took a step closer following Capello's resignation.
A number of names have been linked in a temporary capacity but Redknapp would appear to be the popular choice to lead the national team.
Wayne Rooney, who has spoken of his disappointment at Capello's departure, believes Redknapp is the only suitable candidate for the position.
"Gutted capello has quit. Good guy and top coach. Got to be english to replace him. Harry redknapp for me," Rooney said on Twitter.
Jack Wilshere shares Rooney's feelings, tweeting: "Shocked about news on Fabio Capello...gutted to be honest, gave me my 1st cap and believed in me! Thank you Mr Capello! £GreatManager.
"People have there own judgement on Capello but for a young player who was given the chance to play for my country at such a young age...
"He has shown great belief and trust in me so I can only thank him....massive influence on my career so far! Sad to see him go!"
FA head of elite development Gareth Southgate believes Stuart Pearce should take over in the short term but he has warned it will take a lot for Redknapp to leave Tottenham.
"I would imagine the likely solution is that Stuart Pearce will be in temporary charge, because he is in the building and with the under-21s," he said.
"But you have to think for the summer, can you get the person you want for the longer term? The leading candidates are with clubs at the minute.
"Harry Redknapp is one of the leading candidates. But Tottenham will have something to say about that and [Spurs chairman] Daniel Levy is not going to want Harry to leave without a fight, so there's an awful lot to work out in the next few weeks."
Sunderland manager, Martin O'Neill added: "I think when Fabio was going to leave this summertime after the Euros anyway, that Harry would be favourite to take over.
"I think he should be and I think he deserves that opportunity as well. He should be the one.
"There has been a cry-out for an English manager now. His achievements at Tottenham in the last couple of years have been outstanding.
"He has got them through to the Champions League and they look as if they are going to get there again.
"He's done exceptionally well, and with the result today in the court case, that's no longer hanging over him and that will be a great relief to him."
