Arsenal are being linked with Ajax defender Jan Vertonghen but could face competition from Tottenham for his signature.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is on the look out for a new central defender and could be ready to swoop after the player's agent confirmed some of Europe's top clubs are showing an interest.

Wenger has been boosted by the recent form of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker but he still wants a new central defender and several newspapers are claiming that Vertonghen is a target.

The 24-year-old is seen as the perfect partner for Thomas Vermaelen, who plays alongside Vertonghen in the heart of the Belgium national side defence while they also played together at Ajax.

The Dutch side are unwilling to do business but a fee in the region of £10million could test their resolve in the summer.

Tottenham are also very interested as Harry Redknapp searches for a defender capable of replacing Ledley King who continues to struggle with injuries.
