Captain Chris set for Gold Cup

by Setanta Staff , 13 February 2012

Last season's Racing Post Arkle winner Captain Chris is set to be entered into the Cheltenham Gold Cup, according to his trainer.

Philip Hobbs has previously hinted that his horse could be entered into the shorter Ryanair Chase but he appears to have had a change of heart.

It now looks as if he'll enter Captain Chris into the Gold Cup and take on the likes of Long Run and Kauto Star.

The eight-year-old has recently spent time working on his jumping with guru Yogi Breisner after pulling up in the Argetino Chase last time out, but has reportedly come on leaps and bounds.

This has prompted his trainer to give him a start in the Gold Cup and the 51-year-old is confident his horse could cause a surprise.

"It is very likely he will go for the Gold Cup, possibly the Ryanair," Hobbs told At The Races. "We have considered all options, including going to Punchestown, but there is no two and a half mile race, just two miles or three miles."
