Ex-England cricketer jailed for 13 years

by Tom Kell , 20 May 2009

Former England cricketer Chris Lewis has been handed a 13-year prison sentence after being found guilty of smuggling cocaine into Britain.

Lewis and his co-accused Chad Kirnon were convicted at Croydon Crown Court on Wednesday having been found with the drug when arriving at Gatwick on a flight from St Lucia.

The 41-year-old former all-rounder brought the drug into the country in a dissolved form in cans of fruit and vegetables.

Lewis denied all charges, insisting that he was unaware that the cocaine was in his cricket bag.

The court heard how customs officers seized the equivalent of £140,000 worth of the drug as well as finding traces of cannabis.
