The West Indies are through to the semi-finals of the ICC Twenty20 World Cup, after beating England in their final Group E game at the Oval.
The West Indies chased down a Duckworth Lewis total of 80 in nine overs, after rain intervened during England’s 161-6 in 20 overs.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramanaresh Sarwan hit a partnership of 37 from 18 balls to lead Chris Gayle’s men to the last four.
The Windies seemed to be struggling after Jimmy Anderson had Andre Fletcher caught behind for a duck by James Foster in the first over.
Chris Gayle smited Ryan Sidebottom for a couple of fours in the second overer, but the England man produced a superb yorker to end the West Indies skipper’s innings on 15, from eight balls.
Stuart Broad was brought into the attack for the third over, and Lendl Simmons was out for a duck when he carved the first ball to third-man for Sidebottom to take the catch.
Dwayne Bravo clouted a six off the last ball of Graeme Swann’s over, but in over five, after being hit for a six himself, Adil Rashid bowled a skidder to get rid off Kieran Pollard, bowled for nine.
Then Foster produced another moment of stumping magic to get rid off Bravo off the bowling of Swann, for 18 off 13 balls, and the Windies were 45-5, needing 35 to win off 23 balls.
In Anderson’s second over, over seven, Anderson conceded a terrible wide before being hit for two fours from Sarwan, and suddenly it was 16 needed from the final two overs.
Chanderpaul and Sarwan took 13 from Broad in over eight, the tone being set from the opening ball when Chanderpaul was able to take three from a pull shot that was misfielded by Rashid.
Then Chanderpaul was able to hit the fifth ball for four and suddenly it was three needed from Sidebottom’s final over.
England were never going to defend that, and so it proved, with Chanderpaul ending 17 not out and Sarwan 19 not out.
Earlier, Ravi Bopara hit 55 and Kevin Pietersen struck 31 in the home side's total, but England got bogged down towards the end of the innings.
Pietersen top-edged a sweep to deep square-leg Fletcher off Simmons for 31, then Bopara was trapped leg before by off-spinner Gayle shortly before the first of the rain stopped play with England on 129 for four in the 17th over.
It was looking an achievable total for the Windies after James Foster and Paul Collingwood failed to hit more than a run a ball, but Stuart Broad hit ten from the final two balls off spinner Sulieman Benn to leave West Indies needing to score at eight runs an over.
Pakistan claimed their place in the semi finals of the ICC World Twenty20 with a comfortable 39-run victory over eliminated Ireland at The Oval.
The Pakistani batsmen set Ireland a reachable total of 159-5 but their bowling attack proved too strong and restricted their opponents to just 120-9 from their 20 overs.
Kamran Akmal’s 57 provided the cornerstone of the Pakistan innings, while Shazaib Hasan, Shahid Afridi and Misbah-ul-Haq each made scores in the 20s before being dismissed.
But Younus Khan’s side had their bowlers to thank for insuring victory with Saeed Ajmal taking four wickets for 19, and Saturday’s hero Umar Gul ending with figures of 2-19.
Captain William Porterfield offered moderate resistance, hitting 40 from 36 balls before being caught by Khan off the bowling of Ajmal, while Paul Stirling made 17 and Kevin O’Brien 26.
But it wasn’t enough to prevent Ireland bowing out of the tournament in defeat with their final five wickets falling for just 12 runs.
