Madness cost us - Long

The Royals had been sitting pretty going into the break against Villa with a two goal lead but after ten minutes in the second half they were 3-2 down and staring down the barrel.

"To do so well in the first half and come so close is really disappointing," Long told the Chronicle. "There were 10 minutes of madness when it all slipped away from us. "

But I think we can hold our heads high.

Aston Villa are a great side and I hope they go on and win the competition which would show just how close we came.

"We came in at half-time 2-0 up. We had to get through the first 10 or 15 minutes after the break because we knew Villa would come at us. "

But they got the goals and I think we were a bit unlucky.

Everyone played well but when our heads were down we should have picked ourselves up.

"It wasn't to be but it was a good run in the cup I suppose."

Pompey must make case for Cup winnings

Two goals from Frederic Piquionne saw Pompey earn a 2-0 win over Birmingham City on Saturday to book their place in the semi-finals of the competition, having already eliminated Coventry City, Sunderland and local foes Southampton.

Saturday's win earned STG607,500 for Portsmouth, but - as they are in administration - they have to seek approval from the FA to keep Cup winnings if it is determined that they have met all their obligations to competitive clubs.

If not the money could be withheld as Pompey still owe creditors, the debt of the club continuing to dominate even more south coast headlines than their Cup exploits of their hopeless position at the foot of the Premier League.

They must now to write to the FA and make a representation to the Professional Game Board, who will ascertain if it is appropriate for Avram Grant's side to collect their outside Cup income.

FA Cup semi-final line-up revealed

The Cottagers were held to a goalless draw by Harry Redknapp's men yesterday and must travel to White Hart Lane on March 24.

An inspired display by Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes prevented them from progressing at the first time of asking as he made a string of fine saves to keep out efforts from Bobby Zamora, Damien Duff, Brede Hangeland and Zoltan Gera.

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson couldn't hide his disappointment at the final outcome and fears his side may have missed the boat.

He said: "I'm only the more disappointed because it was a home game and the advantage now passes over to Tottenham because they will be at home for the replay.

"We're pretty evenly matched and I'm disappointed we couldn't get the goal that would have put us through.

"We were close at the end but, on the basis of the play, 0-0 was a fair result, although it was anything other than a dull cup tie because of the quality and commitment on show.

"The atmosphere was magnificent.
"I'm pleased we didn't lose as that would have been a bitter disappointment."

The Cottagers would face Pompey on the weekend of April 10th and 11th.

Chelsea are paired with Aston Villa in the other semi-final after they saw off Stoke and Reading respectively in Sunday's two last eight ties.

Pompey ease past neighbours

Beleaguered Portsmouth rattled off four goals in the last 25 minutes to defeat neighbours Southampton 4-1 and reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Following a goalless first half, in which Jamie O'Hara twice nearly opened the scoring for the visitors, former Arsenal starlet Quincy Owusu-Abeyie got Pompey's first - and his first for the club - in the 66th minute.

Hassan Yebda crossed the ball in from the right, reaching John Utaka who subsequently slotted in Quincy who coolly slotted home from just inside the penalty area.

Pompey were pegged back four minutes later when Rickie Lambert headed past David James, but soon retook the lead when Hayden Mullins released Quincy, who duly sent Aruna Dindane through to chip Kelvin Davis for his second goal in a week.

Saints had a Lee Barnard goal disallowed and their day went from bad to worse.

Belhadj added a third for Avram Grant's team when he raced through and sold Davis a dummy before finishing, and man of the match O'Hara volleyed home the fourth after a sweeping move.

Easy in the end for Chelsea

FA Cup holders Chelsea are into the quarter-finals after they beat Championship side Cardiff City 4-1 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

Didier Drogba put the home side in front after only two minutes, galloping clear of the Bluebirds' defence before flicking the ball past Andy Marshall with the outside of his right foot.

It looked like the Premier League leaders would steamroll over their lower league opponents but, frustratingly, they failed to add to their single goal early on. Carlo Ancelotti's side were made to pay for their profligacy ten minutes from the break when Michael Chopra, completely unmarked by a defence missing the absent John Terry, headed in a cross by Chris Burke.

Chelsea went in at the break level but it took only seven minutes after the restart for them to restore their advantage. Drogba slipped an excellent ball through to the oncoming Michael Ballack, who made no mistake.

From that point onwards it was all Chelsea. The rampaging Drogba saw his effort deflected into the path of his young striker partner Daniel Sturridge, who slotted the ball through the legs of Marshall and into the back of the net.

The Blues confirmed their progress through a brilliant bullet header by Salomon Kalou late on.
