McLaughlin beaming after opening win

Ulster head coach Brian McLaughlin hailed his side after their excellent win over the Ospreys on the opening night of the new Magners League season.

McLaughlin’s men claimed a 27-26 success over the title holders at Ravenhill on Friday, Niall O’Connor’s late penalty proving to be the decisive kick after an end-to end second half.

That score, eight minutes from time, put the hosts one point clear and they held their ground for the remainder, after earlier tries from Stephen Ferris and Darren Cave had seen them secure a narrow half-time lead.

"I think we showed our intent, we had to show where we wanted to go and that's what we did,” a very pleased McLaughlin was quoted as saying by the Belfast Newsletter after the win.

"There were big performances from everyone, you can't single anyone out, the 23 players put in a superb effort tonight.

"It was a brilliant second half, backs to the wall stuff at times but we got the victory we so badly wanted.

"Our defence was excellent and although we could have done better with the ball in hand at times we were strong defensively."
