Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves and new recruit Bebe have been left out of the Champions League squad.
Boss Sir Alex Ferguson has named 24 players, with the limit set at 25, making £7million summer signing Bebe's omission somewhat of a surprise.
Hargreaves is still struggling with a tendinitis problem and is not expected to feature for some time, with United able to name a new squad after the group stages are over on December 7.
New Premier League rules also state clubs must name a 25-man squad, but players under 21 are exempt and managers can use as many players under 21 from within their squad as they wish.
Players such as Gabriel Obertan, Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling did not need to be named in the Premier League squad due to their age, but all three have been included in the Champions League squad.
Manchester United are believed to be in talks with Panathinaikos regarding an £8million move for midfielder Sotiris Ninis.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was linked with the 20-year-old earlier this year and it has now been reported that United have opened talks with Greek side Panathinaikos regarding a transfer.
