Konchesky excited to be a Red

by Setanta staff , 05 September 2010

Liverpool new boy Paul Konchesky is thankful for the chance to play for the famous Merseyside club.

Konchesky joined Liverpool from manager Roy Hodgson’s former club Fulham on transfer deadline day and the ex-Charlton Athletic and West Ham United defender is now determined to prove he is worth his place at such a big club.

"I'm 29 and this is my last chance to play at the highest level," the player was quoted as saying by ESPN.

"That is what Liverpool are and I am really looking forward to it.”

The player is also delighted to be reunited with Hodgson, who led the Fulham side in which Konchesky was a key member to the final of last season’s Europa League before they were beaten in extra-time by Atletico Madrid.

"It (Hodgson) was a big factor but Liverpool being a big club was a massive factor,” he added.

"I'm looking forward to getting a new lease of life and playing at a very high standard. I can't wait to pull on a Liverpool shirt in the Premier League - it is a massive club and it is a big step for me.

"I just want to give it my all and go from there. I've had three or four days' training and although there have not been a lot of players there it has been a good week and I am hopefully going to enjoy it soon.

"You look at the history they have got behind them - it is unbelievable - and there are some great players here. If we can bring that back to the side this year in something like the Europa League then this team can go a long way."

Konchesky played a small role as a substitute in Jamie Carragher’s testimonial against an Everton XI on Saturday and will hope to make his league bow for the Reds in next Sunday’s game at Birmingham City, a club who were also linked with him during the summer.
