Gyan in good shape for Black Cats debut

by Admin , 07 September 2010

Record signing Asamoah Gyan is targeting trophies for Sunderland ahead of his probable debut on Saturday.

The £13m capture from Rennes showed he was in good form with a brace for Ghana and is set to return to Weirside later this week to prepare for his Premier league bow against Wigan Athletic.

"First of all, I want to help both Ghana and my new club win trophies," said the 24-year-old.

"I can only do well if I'm winning things at club and international level.

"But I don't want to get ahead of myself. The most important thing for me is to improve and mature as a player.

"Playing in England is a dream to many players, so I'm happy to be here. It's a big stage and I'm looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead.

"I know it won't be easy, but I will work twice as hard in order to achieve my goals.

"First I have to adapt to the conditions, but sure, I'm looking forward to the challenge and a change of environment."

Meanwhile, Sunderland manager Steve Bruce says he is happy with his squad and isn't planning any more major changes to the playing staff.

Bruce has rung plenty of changes in his time at the club, leaving only five senior players from the Roy Keane-assembled squad he inherited from Ricky Sbragia in 2008.

Only Kieran Richardson, Steed Malbranque and Phil Bardsley remain from that side that lost to Chelsea on the final day of the season to the one that beat Manchester City the weekend before last.

Craig Gordon and Anton Ferdinand are still among the ranks, although the defender has come close to leaving more than once since Bruce arrived.

But the Black Cats boss says he has no intention of ripping up what he's got and starting again.

"The era of big changes is over, definitely. I am approaching a year and a half of a three-year contract and I cannot envisage going and doing at Christmas or next summer what we have just done," he told the Journal.

"For a start, I will exhaust everyone at the club - and myself! We have had something like 28 out and in, and that not even in a year and a half.

"I cannot see me making more wholesale changes - it would be ridiculous to think it."
