Gordon, Caldwell back in Scotland squad

by Setanta staff , 30 September 2010

Scotland manager Craig Levein has recalled Craig Gordon and Gary Caldwell for the Euro 2012 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Spain.

Meanwhile, in-form Queens Park Rangers front man Jamie Mackie has been given the nod at the expense of the omitted Kris Boyd of Middlesbrough, while Celtic winger Shaun Maloney is another man back after injury.

Sunderland goalkeeper Gordon has been given the nod ahead of Cardiff City’s David Marshall despite not playing yet this season after he broke his arm in pre-season.

Wigan defender Caldwell, meanwhile, is likely to only be used for one game at the most after an agreement was reached between Levein and Latics manager Roberto Martinez. The former Celtic man is still finding his fitness after a summer hip operation.

Lee McCulloch, suspended for the game in Prague next Friday, is in the squad and could face world champions Spain in Glasgow on October 12, but his former Rangers team-mate, midfielder Kevin Thomason of Middlesbrough, has not made it after a layoff.

Meanwhile, Barcelona’s brilliant midfielder Xavi is a surprise omission from the Spain squad for the visit to Glasgow and the prior game with Lithuania as he is said to be suffering with tendinitis.

He joins Arsenal midfield man Cesc Fabregas, who has a damaged hamstring, and Real Madrid defender Raul Albiol (ligament injury) in sitting out the double-header.

Scotland lead Group I after drawing 0-0 in Lithuania and rescuing a 2-1 win against Liechtenstein last month, while holders Spain beat the latter opposition 4-0 in their only game thus far.
