Preview: Czech Rep v Scotland (Fri)

by Setanta staff , 07 October 2010

Scotland need something from their away game with the Czech Republic to keep their Euro 2012 qualification dream realistic.

The Scots' 0-0 draw in Lithuania was a disappointing outcome in Group I a month ago, while they needed a winner in the seventh minute of stoppage-time to beat lowly Liechtenstein. The opposition should be far tougher on Friday, but Craig Levein will be keen for his men to take advantage of a Czech team in transition.

The Czechs lost at home to Lithuania last month so this is must-win for them and Levein will hope an under-strength Scottish defence does not help the Czech cause.

Kirk Broadfoot is missing with a bruised foot, with Jay McEveley also ruled out and Alan Hutton and goalkeeper Allan McGregor doubtful.

Gary Caldwell is short of match time but is reportedly fit after a double hip operation in the summer, though David Weir and Stephen McManus will likely retain the centre-back berths. First-time call-up Phil Bardsley could also be thrown in if Hutton does not make it.

Further forward, Lee McCulloch is suspended but will be back for the game with Spain on Tuesday, while there has been much talk that QPR's in-form front man Jamie Mackie could displace Kenny Miller (pictured scoring against Liechtenstein) from the starting line-up.

Former Liverpool forward Milan Baros will not lead the Czechs' line as he has a thigh injury and fellow striker Martin Fenin is also missing, so Lukas Magera, Vaclav Kadlec or West Brom's out-of-sorts Roman Bednar may be called upon.

Familiar faces Petr Cech and Tomas Rosicky are also in the squad, with Jan Polak and Jaroslav Plasil the men that coach Michal Bilek will be looking at to make things tick.
