Ipswich do what Liverpool could not

by Setanta staff , 26 October 2010

Ipswich Town are into the last eight of the Carling Cup after defeating Northampton Town 3-1 at Portman Road on Tuesday evening.

Liam Davis gave the visitors the lead, but the Championship men came roaring back and Carlos Edwards, Damien Delaney and Tamas Priskin all found the net to put Roy Keane’s men into the quarter-final.

The Cobblers went into the game with the memory of their third round win over giants Liverpool fresh in the minds and – after also ousting Brighton and Reading from higher divisions – the League Two side were the first to trouble the scoreboard.

Kevin Thornton fed Davis in the 16th minute and he fired a long-distance effort high over Brian Murphy’s head and into the middle of the Tractor Boys’ goal.

However, that goal had come against the run of play and Keane’s side were level ten minutes later, as Edwards profited from some slackness in the Northampton defence and fired a fine finish in from a difficult angle.

Keane’s men then hit the front just before the break when his fellow Irishman Delaney made it 2-1. Visiting goalkeeper Chris Dunn had denied a Grant Leadbitter effort, but Delaney was on hand to pounce from Andros Townsend’s resultant corner.

After the break, Northampton teenager Michael Jacobs – a scorer at Anfield – fired wildly over the top in Ian Sampson’s side’s best chance.

However, the win was sealed for Ipswich with two minutes to go as Hungarian front man Priskin got his head to Leadbitter’s free-kick and flicked the ball beyond Dunn.
