League One side Notts County stunned Sunderland at the Stadium of Light to book their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
The Black Cats had lost just one league game on Wearside all season, yet they fell behind after only five minutes to Paul Ince's men, when Craig Westcarr profited from an error by keeper Simon Mignolet.
Steve Bruce fielded plenty of regular first-teamers such as Darren Bent and Asamoah Gyan, but they simply could not get going in a frustrating performance.
No doubt spurred on by a half-time roasting from Bruce, Sunderland looked a better side after the interval, but they could not find an equaliser.
With 15 minutes to play the visitors found themselves in dreamland as they effectively killed off the tie - former West Brom man Lee Hughes netted his 10th of the season as the home side's fans began streaming through the exits.
Bent converted a late penalty to offer the Premier League outfit some hope, but there was to be no grandstand finish as Notts County held on for a deserved win.
