Vieira eyes FA Cup success

by JP Lonergan , 20 February 2011

Manchester City's Patrick Vieira says that it is very important that the club gets their hands on some silverware this season.

It has been 35 years since a meaningful top level trophy was put in a cabinet on the blue side of Manchester, but Vieira’s two goals in the 5-0 FA Cup fourth round replay win over Notts County on Sunday saw them advance in that competition, one the Frenchman thinks they can go on to win.

City face Villa in the last 16, with the winners of that tie already drawn to face either Everton or Reading in the quarter-finals. And Vieira - a four-time winner of the Cup in his Arsenal days - says he is part of a squad strong enough to be winning trophies

"We know how to win but we saw how difficult it will be to go all the way,” Vieira told ITV1 after his two goals and strikes from Carlos Tevez, Edin Dzeko and Micah Richards saw off Paul Ince’s men.

"We need to believe in ourselves, work as hard as we did today and we will see.

"It's a competition in which the club want to do well. It's important for us to win some silverware this season but there is still a long way to go.

"But when you see how deep our squad is we have to believe in ourselves."
On his two headed goals from corners and the game itself, he added: "We don't score enough goals from corners or free-kicks so thank God I scored twice.

"We have to give them credit for the way they played in the first 20 minutes, they put us in trouble.

"We are happy to get into the next round."
