England legend David Beckham appears to have conceded his Euro 2012 hopes are over after targeting Olympic glory instead.
The 36-year-old has never retired from Three Lions duty although he has been overlooked by coach Fabio Capello since injuring his ankle prior to the 2010 World Cup.
But now Beckham has set his sights on captaining the Great Britain football team at London 2012.
GB coach Stuart Pearce will not select any player who has featured in Poland and Ukraine and it appears Beckham has chosen the more realistic goal this year.
The LA Galaxy star, who signed a new two-year deal with the MLS side this week, admitted: "I would love to be captain.
"I have led my country before and know how special it would be to lead them into the Olympics." However, Beckham says he has not been told yet if he has even made the GB squad as an over-age player.
He added: "I've had conversations with Stuart Pearce, but not been selected.
"I would love to be part of Team GB."
