Big freeze hits racing calendar

Racing in Britain continues to be affected by the icy temperatures affecting Europe with several meetings abandoned and others under severe threat.

Chepstow made an early decision on their National Hunt fixture planned for Friday with the card abandoned following a 1.30pm inspection on Thursday and Catterick has gone the same way.

Officials were concerned by the threat of overnight frost and their fears were justified as temperatures dropped to minus 7C.

An inspection planned for 8am proved unnecessary as clerk of the course Fiona Needham made the decision to abandon earlier than planned.

"It got to minus 7C overnight and it froze throughout the night," said Needham.

"It wasn't really a hard decision, there was no point hanging around until 8am as we're while we're forecast to reach 2C, that's not until later on so we've no chance of being raceable in time."

The situation does not look better for Saturday with the meeting at Sandown the first to fall to the frost.

Despite the track being covered, some frost managed to get into the ground and clerk of the course Andrew Cooper called a precautionary inspection for Friday morning.

Another cold night proved too much for the course and Cooper admitted he found it relatively easy to abandon the meeting, which had been due to feature Binocular.

"It's obviously disappointing but I think, to be fair, we probably knew it was going to be an uphill battle at the close of play yesterday," Cooper said.

"It dropped to minus 4C here overnight, but the wind chill has also dropped, so in a way it's not really any worse than it was yesterday.

"We are frozen in places, despite the covers being down, and it was a relatively straightforward decision.

"We're expecting to go up to 2C today but it won't be enough. From where we are now, we need to be hitting 5C or 6C in this time scale."

Ffos Las have been working hard to ensure their Welsh Champion Hurdle card goes ahead and the course is currently covered in protective fleeces.

However, frost has managed to make its way into the ground and there are fears that even more could get under the covers on Friday.

Clerk of the course Tim Long has called an inspection for 9am on Saturday but he is hopeful that the meeting will beat the big freeze.

"We had a sharper frost than expected last night, minus 5C verging on minus 6C at it's worst," he said.

"Unsurprisingly it does feel a bit frozen under the covers. We are forecast a dry and clear day, with a maximum of 2C or 3C, and then it is due to remain clear into the night with the temperature dropping to minus 1C or 2C.

"Cloud cover is then forecast with some rain but it's a question of how soon that comes in so we will look at 9am when we will have a better idea."

Wetherby, meanwhile, will hold an inspection at 3on on Friday to assess the chances for Saturday.

The West Yorkshire course has managed to escape the work of the weather but temperatures did fall below freezing overnight and the track is currently frozen in places.

"We were at minus 6C from about 5am until 8am and we're now at minus 4C," clerk of the course Jonjo Sanderson reported.

"It's been freezing since 9pm and we are forecast anything from 0C to 1C or 2C at best today, but there is a rogue forecast saying we could get to 4C.

"If that's right, it would give us the opportunity to reassess the situation in the morning. We are generally forecast minus 4C overnight, but it could go as low as minus 5C, 6C or even 7C which would scupper us."
