Wolves take the points at QPR

by Setanta Staff , 04 February 2012

Wolves came from behind to beat ten-man QPR 2-1 at Loftus Road on Saturday.

Matt Jarvis and Kevin Doyle scored second-half goals for the Black Country side, after QPR had taken the lead through Bobby Zamora's 16th minute strike.

Mark Hughes' team had Djibril Cisse sent off 11 minutes before half-time.

Debutant Zamora's opener was taken in emphatic style. Shaun Wright-Phillips held up a ball from Adel Taarabt before laying off a pass for the former England striker to slam a shot past Wolves' goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

Wolves, who went into the game on a run of nine matches without a win, saw their midfield enforcer Emmanuel Frimpong limp off soon after.

But QPR were down to ten men on 34 minutes, when referee Mark Clattenburg showed a straight red card to Cisse for retaliation after he was fouled by Roger Johnson.

Doyle came on at half-time in place of Richard Stearman, and the Ireland international was the catalyst for the equalising goal a minute into the second half.

It was his cross from the right that caused consternation in the QPR defence, and the rebound fell to Jarvis, who cut inside Luke Young and curled a shot past QPR goalkeeper Paddy Kenny.

QPR then needed Anton Ferdinand to stop Sylvain Ebanks-Blake from converting a Steven Fletcher effort, whilst at the other end a Taarabt free-kick dipped just wide of Hennessey's near post.

But Doyle hit the winner on 71 minutes, when he coolly converted an Ebanks-Blake cross from the left after the former Manchester United youngster had been released by Jamie O'Hara.

QPR frantically chased an equaliser in the final ten minutes, with Armand Traore going close with one effort before Hennessey tipped over a 30-yard Taarabt drive.

Roger Johnson deflected away a Wright-Phillips shot moments later, then Joey Barton went close with a long-range effort, but Mick McCarthy's men held on for a crucial three points.
