Hart plays down captaincy talk

by Setanta Staff , 06 February 2012 City star plays down Three Lions talk

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart feels 'there are stronger candidates than myself' to be considered for the England captaincy.

Three Lions coach Fabio Capello is on the look-out for a new skipper ahead of this summer's Euro 2012 tournament after the Football Association controversially stripped John Terry of the armband late last week.

And, while 24-year-old Hart admitted to being 'flattered' at being mentioned as a leading contender, he feels there other members of the squad who are more qualified to take on the job.

"I'm flattered to be linked with it, but I think anyone who's having a consistent run in the England side is being linked with it," he said.

"There are stronger candidates than myself. I think there's a long way to go [before the captaincy].

"I've got a really important season, games for Man City and hopefully a couple for England coming up.

"That's all I'm concentrating on at the moment. As long as I'm playing, I don't care who's captain."

Capello has slammed his FA bosses for axing Terry as the England captain, but Hart refused to be drawn into the ongoing debate.

"It's not really for me to comment." he added. "I don't know the ins and outs. I don't know what was said or wasn't said."
