Rangers close on Cousin signing

Rangers are closing on the signing of striker Daniel Cousin on a free transfer as boss Ally McCoist looks to resurrect his team's title challenge.

The Scottish champions are in talks with Cousin who is currently away at the African Nations Cup with Gabon and are now just awaiting international clearance.

McCoist is keen to improve his attacking options following the departure of top goalscorer Nikica Jelavic to Everton last month and believes that 35-year-old Cousin, who moved from Rangers to Hull £3million in 2008, still has a lot to offer. He also didn't rule out further signings over the coming days.

"I've spoken to Daniel at great length over the last few days. I've watched him in the African Nations Cup as well, in particular the games against Tunisia and Morocco in which he scored, and he is very keen to come," McCoist said.

"When he was here was a big, strong powerful centre forward. Having looked at his performances closely in the African Nations Cup, that doesn't seem to have altered at all. He has a very physical presence and can still score a goal. He would certainly be a welcome addition to our squad.

"I don't think, in all honesty, that I can remember a more physical or bigger, stronger centre-forward with a bit of pace as well. I had a great relationship with Daniel and hopefully that can continue."

Rangers and the Scottish Football Association are awaiting confirmation from the Gabon FA on when Cousin's contract with FC Sapins expired and if the player is actually a free agent. If Cousin does return to Rangers, he faces an immediate ban for the red card he picked up in his last game for the club - a 4-2 win over Celtic in August 2008.
