No hard feelings, says Capello

by Setanta Staff , 09 February 2012 football news

Fabio Capello has wished Euro 2012 hopefuls England "every success" for this summer in response to his shock resignation on Wednesday.

The English Football Association confirmed on Wednesday the Italian had relinquished his role as national team coach after four hours of crunch talks with the governing body on Wednesday.

It is understood the 65-year-old walked away in dispute over the FA's decision to strip Chelsea defender John Terry of the captaincy as he awaits trial on charges of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand of QPR.

"I would like to thank all players, staff and Football Association for the professionalism they have shown during my years as manager of the English national team," the Italian said, after four years in charge.

"A very special thanks to all the supporters: they've always supported the team and me in our job. I wish all of them every success in achieving all their sporting goals."

Current assistant Stuart Pearce will take charge of England's friendly against the Netherlands on February 29.

Harry Redknapp has emerged as the favourite to replace Capello, while Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew and Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill have said they are not interested in the vacancy.

Redknapp, 64, has transformed Tottenham into genuine Premier League title contenders and said his immediate focus was to stay in north London and continue the pursuit of leaders Manchester City.

"I've never thought about [the England job]," he said. "[The FA] will make whatever decision they want to make and hopefully it will be right for the country. Tottenham have been fantastic. "

It wouldn't be right to focus on anything else other than Tottenham."
