Rovers win relegation battle

by Setanta Staff , 11 February 2012

Blackburn Rovers moved level on points with Queens Park Rangers thanks to a 3-2 win over the Londoners at Ewood Park on Saturday.

Strikes from Yakubu and Steven Nzonzi, and a Nedum Onuoha own goal, had the hosts 3-0 up at the break. Despite rallying through a brace from Jamie Mackie, QPR were unable to earn a point.

Blackburn remain in the relegation zone, but are now level with both QPR (16th) and Wolves (17th).

Yakubu netted the opener fifteen minutes into the clash, as he evaded Anton Ferdinand and fired past Paddy Kenny after Paul Robinson’s kick-out had been flicked on by Nzonzi.

The hosts double their lead soon afterwards, when Nzonzi exchanged passes with Junior Hoilett and swept home a fine finish.

Fulham threatened to pull a goal back, with Booby Zamora’s overhead kick going just wide and Armand Traore testing Robinson, but fell three behind before the break.

The home side had Onuoha to thank for their third, the defender deflecting Hoilett's angled shot into his own net.

Yakubu chipped an effort onto the bar early in the second period, but Rangers soon grabbed the initiative and substitute Mackie reduced the arrears when he finished from Taye Taiwo's cross.

The visitors continued to press, but Blackburn held firm until Mackie netted in injury time, shooting into the top corner following a pass from Adel Taarabt.

However, there was enough time for Mark Hughes’ men to fashion another opening, as Rovers recorded what could prove to be a crucial win.
