Synchronised top weight for National

Lexus Chase winner Synchronised has been allotted top weight for this year's John Smith's Grand National at Aintree.

Jonjo O'Neill's charge bypassed last weekend's Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown after taking longer than expected to recover from his Lexus exertions and if he is to land the National on April 14 he will have to do so with 11st 10lb on his back.

There are 82 entries for this year's race , including last year's winner Ballabriggs, who has been handed 11st 9lb, an increase of 9lb following his 2011 triumph.

The Neil Mulholland-trained Midnight Chase is next in the list with 11st 8lb, the same weight that Weird Al will have to carry if he is to succeed for Donald McCain.

Nicky Henderson's Burton Port has been handed 11st 7lb as has the Willie Mullins-trained Quel Esprit, although he is set to go for the Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup next month.

Irish-trained horses have a superb record in the Aintree marathon with six of the last 13 winners comming from this side of the Irish Sea and Quel Esprit is one of 31 entries from Ireland.

Mullins is responsible for 12 of those with Thyestes Chase winner On His Own (10st 11lb), Blazing Tempo, the only mare entered, (11st 4lb), Apt Approach (11st 1lb), Scotsirish (11st 2lb) and Prince De Beauchene (10st 6lb) among his possibles.

Other leading irish-trained contenders include Roberto Goldback (11st 4lb) and Black Apalachi (11st 3lb) from Dessie Hughes' yard and Psycho (11st), Chicago Grey (10st 13lb), Seabass (10st 12lb) and Treacle (10st 8lb)

Junior is the current ante-post favourite for the race with the David Pipe-trained gelding set to carry 11st 2lb, while 2009 winner Mon Mome has been given 10st 8lb.

Notable entries include Shakalakaboomboom (10st 12lb), Quantitativeeasing (11st 2lb), Hold On Julio (10st 7lb), State Of Play (10st 3lb) and Deep Purple (11st 3lb).

"It is tremendous to see 69 of the 82 entries in the handicap and the 2012 renewal of Grand National promises to be a race full of quality, with more horses rated over 135 entered than ever before," Aintree's managing director Julian Thick said.
