Ricky Ponting made a losing return as Australia captain as Sri Lanka prevailed by eight wickets in a rain-affected ODI in Sydney.
In their sixth game of the triangular series between Australia, Sri Lanka and India, Ponting lead out the Aussies for the first time since standing down after last year's World Cup with usual skipper Michael Clarke out injured.
However, it proved to be a miserable day for the 37-year-old as he made just two with the bat as Australia limped to 158 all out after 40.5 overs.
A soggy day at the SCG meant the score was revised to 152 under the Duckworth-Lewis method and Sri Lanka wasted no time in eating away into that total.
Mahela Jayawardene led the way with a brilliant 61 not out from 67 balls while his fellow opener Tillakaratne Dilshan struck 45 from just 41 deliveries.
The victory was wrapped up with 101 balls to spare to complete a miserable return to the captaincy for Ponting, who looks set to lead the side again in Brisbane on Sunday after Clarke revealed his hamstring strain has still not fully healed.
