End of the road for Ponting?

by Setanta Staff , 20 February 2012

Ricky Ponting may have played his last ODI for Australia after being dropped for the next two matches of the current triangular series.

The 37-year-old has captained the Baggy Greens in the past two one-dayers in the absence of the injured Michael Clarke, but his elevation to skipper made little difference to his form with the bat as he has still to make double figures in the series.

Following a resurgence in the Test series, when the Tasmanian scored one hundred and a double century, the hope was that he would be able to convert that form to the 50-over game to lend his experience to a side in transition, with several youngsters coming through.

But he has been unable to get anything going in his five innings to date with scores of two, one, six and two, before falling to Irfan Pathan for just seven on Sunday.

Ponting has been one of the best-ever one-day players with 13,704 runs at an average of 42.03, but, as national selector John Inverarity revealed, it may be time for the side to move on.

"Ricky has been dropped due to his lack of form in this series," he said. "He'll consider his future over the next couple of days. We hope he remains available for Test match cricket.

"Ricky being prepared to take over the captaincy in Clarke's recent absence for the sake of the team is yet another example of his selfless attitude and team-first focus."
