Newcastle duo are academy idols

by Setanta Staff , 22 February 2012 Newcastle youngsters are academy idols

Newcastle's potential stars of the future have been urged to follow the example of Sammy Ameobi and Shane Ferguson.

Midfielder Ameobi, the younger brother of striker Shola, and full-back Ferguson have forced their way into Alan Pardew's squad this season after progressing through the ranks.

Now as the Magpies look to invest heavily in the search for budding talent, academy manager Joe Joyce believes the elevated status enjoyed by some of his most recent graduates means he does not have to sell the dream to the youngsters hoping to follow in their footsteps.

"That sells it more than any words I can say to them," Joyce said.

"When they see a Sammy Ameobi or a Shane Ferguson, boys who they have actually trained with and worked with in this environment, now appearing on the first-team stage, that sells it much more than I can."
