Compton shares lead in Greenbrier

A two-time heart transplant patient leads hit a sublime seven-under-par 63 to share the lead in the Greenbrier Open after the first round.

Erik Compton, a 30-year-old from Florida, has suffered health problems since childhood but has refused to let illness get the better of him.

His brilliant opening round was matched only by compatriot Matt Every, with Compton overcoming early bogeys on the second and third holes in West Virginia.

"It was a difficult start," Compton said.

"You have to have drive it good (here). If you do, you can definitely take advantage.

"I hit some really close shots, a couple of good putts. I guess the round just kind of developed like that."

The first five places are an all-American affair, with Pat Perez, Jeff Overton and George McNeill sharing third spot.

The leading European is Richard S. Johnson of Sweden, who is currently tied for 11th after a 66.
