Gillick only fifth as Borlee takes gold

by Setanta Staff , 30 July 2010

David Gillick suffered the disappointment of defeat as he finished fifth behind Kevin Borlée of Belgium in the final of the men's 400m at the European Championships.

Gillick had been one of the favourites going into Friday's final, but the Dundrum athlete could only manage 45.28, a time some way below his best effort.

After going out hard, Gillick was well positioned around the final bend but he was swallowed up as Borlee sprang a surprise to win gold from Britain's Mark Bingham and Martyn Rooney.

Paul Hession, meanwhile was sixth in the men's 200m final with France's Christophe Lemaitre coming through in a thrilling finish to capture gold.

Hession was the first Irishman to ever reach a major sprint final and he looked like challenging for a medal as the field swung into the straight.

He was unable to maintain his challenge as Britain's Christian Malcolm opened a considerable lead on the field. Lemaitre, however, came with a flying run to catch Malcolm on the line. France's Martial Mbandjock was third.

Britain's Andy Turner won the men's 110m hurdles with France's Garfield Darien and Daniel Kiss of Hungary taking silver and bronze, while the Spanish crowd finally had something to cheer about as Arturo Casado took the 1500m gold in the final event of the day.

Casado defeated Germany's Carsten Schlangen with Spaniard Manuel Olmedo third.
