Wigan edge Hull in FA Cup

by Setanta Staff , 08 January 2011

Wigan Athletic won 3-2 away to Hull City on Saturday to book their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Wigan led at the interval through Mohamed Diame, and young frontman Callum McManaman doubled the visitors’ advantage 11 minutes into second half.

Nick Barmby pulled one back for the hosts but Diame propelled Wigan back into a two-goal lead, before Barmby struck again for Hull late on.

Wigan dominated the early exchanges, with Daniel De Ridder proving most dangerous, twice forcing good saves by Matt Duke.

The visitors took the lead on 21 minutes. McManaman's ball from the right broke for Diame, who failed to control, but then easily comforted after De Ridder had poked the loose ball towards goal.

Hull wasted a decent chance to level in the 37th minute, with Matty Fryatt lobbing an effort just over the bar.

Wigan should have gone two-up early in the second period, but McManaman headed straight at Duke after De Ridder had hit the post with a shot.

McManaman, however, added his side’s second before the hour-mark, cutting inside before curling in an effort from the edge of the box.

De Ridder and McManaman both had chances to end the game as a contest, but Hull pulled one back with 16 minutes to go through substitute Barmby, who produced a neat finish from Andy Dawson’s deep cross.

Wigan, however, grabbed their third soon afterwards, with Diame taking advantage of ample space to clip a finish past Duke.

Both sides then had half-chances in a frantic period, culminating in Barmby’s second goal, as the veteran midfielder headed home from Jamie Devitt’s cross.

That was, though, the last of the scoring, as Wigan edged their way into the next round.
