Patrick Makau has broken the world marathon record with victory in Berlin for the second consecutive year.
The Kenyan retained his title with a time of two hours, three minutes and 38 seconds and broke the record by 21 seconds that was set by Haile Gebrselassie over the same course in 2008.
The former record holder failed to finish this time around as he was forced to pull up at the 27km mark with stomach problems.
It is the fifth time in 14 years that the men's world record has been broken in the German capital and Makau admits that he had his sights on the record midway through the race.
"In the morning my body was not good but, after I started the race, it started reacting very well. I started thinking about the record," he said.
"I didn't have any problems in the race. Last year I had some problems with my soles inside my shoe, but today everything went very well."
It was a double for Kenya as Florence Kiplagat won the women's race with a time of 2 hours, 19 minutes and 44 seconds.
Britain's Paula Radcliffe finished third in her first marathon since 2009, but has now qualified for the Olympics in London next year.
