Aussies in control

by Setanta Staff , 25 January 2012

Australia have given themselves an excellent chance of completing a 4-0 whitewash over India after posting a huge total on day two.

Beginning the day on 335-3, the hosts finally declared their first innings on 604-7, with both Ricky Ponting and captain Michael Clarke recording double centuries.

Clarke has already hit a triple century in the series and he backed it up with 210 at the Adelaide Oval, while Ponting compiled 221 as the Indians wilted in the searing South Australia temperatures.

Brad Haddin chipped in with a rapid unbeaten 42 while paceman Ryan Harris was 35 not out when Clarke called time on proceedings.

India needed a solid start but they did not get one as stand-in captain Virender Sehwag went for 18 to Peter Siddle, while Rahul Dravid was bowled by Ben Hilfenhaus for just a single.

Sachin Tendulkar will resume on 12 on day three and will continue his quest for an elusive 100th international century, while Gautam Gambhir is unbeaten on 30 overnight.

The tourists trail by 543 runs and will have it all to do to escape with a draw from this match.
