Fast bowler Chris Tremlett will miss the rest of England's current tour of the UAE due to the back injury that resurfaced on Monday.
The 30-year-old had only just come back into the England set-up after more than five months on the sidelines after breaking down with a back problem against India last summer.
He played in the first Test defeat to Pakistan in Dubai and, despite failing to take a wicket, was expected to feature for the tourists in Abu Dhabi this week.
However, after complaining of soreness in both his back and side on Monday, the problem has not responded to treatment and the England management have taken the decision to send the Surrey man back home to continue his rehabilitation.
Tremlett has endured a truncated international career and at one stage looked set to spend the rest of his time in county cricket due to the constant injury problems.
But he came back into the side against Australia last winter and performed with credit as England won the Ashes Down Under.
Graeme Onions has already been elevated to full tour status as cover in the seam bowling department but it has been announced that there will be another fast bowler called up ahead of the third Test.
