Brandt Snedeker capitalised on a final-round collapse by unlucky Kyle Stanley to claim the Farmers Insurance Open title in California.
Stanley, the leader by five strokes going into the final round, appeared to be cruising to victory as he picked up two more on the field to lead by seven at one stage.
However, the 24-year-old dropped five shots on the back nine, including a triple-bogey at the 18th, while Snedeker fired six birdies in the final round to finish alongside Stanley at 16-under and force a play-off.
The 31-year-old then held his nerve the better of the pair during the two sudden-death holes, as both claimed birdies on the 18th before Snedeker holed a five-foot par putt at 16 while Stanley lipped out from a similar range.
Snedeker was understandably delighted by the unlikely victory - his third win on the PGA Tour.
"It's just crazy," he said.
"I am so excited but my heart goes out to Kyle, I feel badly for him."
The second-placed finish was Stanley's second on tour after he finished as runner up to Steve Stricker in the John Deere Classic, leaving him still chasing his first PGA victory.
John Rollins finished in outright third place on 14-under with Bill Haas and Cameron Tringale rounding out the top five as they each finished 12-under the card.
England's Justin Rose shot a disappointing one-over 73 on Sunday to wind up six-under for the event.
