Haddin unsure of ODI future

by Setanta Staff , 31 January 2012

Brad Haddin admits it will be difficult to get back in the Australia one-day side after he was dropped for the triangular series.

The 34-year-old has made 93 ODI appearances for the Baggy Greens to date, scoring 2,257 runs at a decent average of 35.82 and with three centuries, but he has been omitted from the squad to face India and Sri Lanka in the first three matches with Matthew Wade taking the gloves.

Haddin had to bide his time in state cricket before getting his chance due to the fact that Adam Gilchrist monopolised the gauntlets in all forms of the game for so many years but he took his chance after Gilchrist's retirement and has played 43 Tests and 25 Twenty20 matches for Australia.

But it appears that his time in the 50-over game might be coming to an end as the Aussie selectors continue their policy of introducing new blood to the squad.

Wade has yet to play an ODI but has made two T20 appearances for the men from Down Under and he has a healthy first-class average of 40.16 and a domestic one-day average of 42.25.

They are impressive statistics that have made the selectors sit up and take note and the 24-year-old Victoria star will look to impress early in the series.

Chairman of selectors John Inverarity and coach Mickey Arthur both said Haddin was being rested for the first three games of the series but the New South Wales keeper disagrees and feels he has been axed.

"I think any time you're out of the Australian cricket team you're dropped," he said. "You give another guy an opportunity to take your spot and if they do well you could find it hard to get back in the team.

"If you give your spot up and someone does well you've got no right to walk straight back in. You might never play again."

Australia play two T20s against India before they face MS Dhoni's side and the Sri Lankans in four one-dayers, with the top two from the round-robin stage playing off in the final.
