Three debutants for England

by Michelle Fortune , 02 February 2012

England head coach Stuart Lancaster has named three uncapped players in his starting XV for Saturday's RBS Six Nations match against Scotland.

Lancaster is looking to rebuild the Red Roses after a poor World Cup and he has opted for a mix of youth and experience in his first ever England team, naming Owen Farrell, Brad Barritt and Phil Dowson in the starting XV.

Saracens duo Farrell and Barritt have been named in the centre with Dowson taking his place at number eight.

In total there are eight uncapped players in the 22-man squad with Wasps hooker Rob Webber, Leicester lock Geoff Parling, Scarlets number eight Ben Morgan, Northampton scrum-half Lee Dickson and Harlequins centre Jordan Turner-Hall all named on the bench.

Charlie Hodgson will earn his 37th cap when he makes his first Test start in four years at fly-half, while Chris Robshaw will captain England in what is only his second Test appearance for England.

The team features ten changes from the side that beat Scotland in the World Cup quarter-final with Ben Foden, Chris Ashon, Ben Youngs, Dan Cole and Tom Croft retaining their places.

"We have been impressed with how the whole group has come together in the last 10 days and we have done a lot of work on and off the field," Lancaster said.

"Now is the time to turn all that into a performance against Scotland that we can all be proud of. It is a massive challenge - Murrayfield, the first game of the Six Nations - but one we are relishing."

England (XV v Scotland): B Foden; C Ashton, B Barritt, O Farrell, D Strettle; C Hodgson, B Youngs; A Corbisiero, D Hartley, D Cole, M Botha, T Palmer, T Croft, C Robshaw, P Dowson.

Replacements: R Webber, M Stevens, G Parling, B Morgan, L Dickson, J Turner-Hall, M Brown.
