Scots Cup: Celtic travel to Dundee Utd

by Kieran O'Daly , 06 February 2012

Celtic will travel to Dundee United in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup after once again being drawn to play away from home in the competition.

After potentially tricky trips to Peterhead and Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the previous two rounds, Celtic boss Neil Lennon might have been forgiven for hoping that the holders might get something a little bit easier than a trip to Tannadice in the quarter-finals as they attempt to defend the trophy they won last May.

Peter Houston's side upset the odds to beat Celtic's Old Firm rivals Rangers 2-0 at Ibrox on Sunday to reach the last eight and are sure to provide a stern test for Neil Lennon's men. The Tangerines currently lie seventh in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League table, but have finished fourth and third respectively over the past two seasons.

The other highlight of Monday's draw was the possible meeting of Motherwell, currently third in the SPL, and Aberdeen. The Dons, lying in sixth in the league, will have to overcome a replay with Irn-Bru Division One side Queen of the South. Meanwhile, St Mirren also face the prospect of all-SPL clash should they win their replay against Ross County, as they will travel to either to Hearts or St Johnstone.

Hibernian face an away day at either Ayr United or Falkirk, who will now play their fifth-round tie on February 15 after Saturday's clash was postponed.

The three fifth-round replays will be played a day earlier on February 14, while the quarter-finals will take place on the weekend of March 10 and 11.

Quarter-final draw:

Hearts/St Johnstone v St Mirren/Ross County
Ayr United/Falkirk v Hibernian
Dundee United v Celtic
Motherwell v Aberdeen/Queen of the South

Ties to be played weekend of March 10-11.
