Corbett announces shock retirement

by Michelle Fortune , 07 February 2012

Lar Corbertt has called time on his inter-county career, citing work and business commitments.

Corbett has been unable to train regularly with the Tipperary panel this year and despite being named in the Munster squad to face his native county in the recent challenge game, he failed to feature.

The 2010 Hurler of the Year met Tipperary senior hurling manager Declan Ryan on Monday night and informed him that he would not be able to commit to the Premier County for another season.

The 30-year-old then circulated a text to his team-mates to make them aware of the situation.

"The Tipperary senior hurling management regrets that Lar Corbett has informed us of his withdrawal from the Tipperary senior hurling panel due to work and business commitments," a statement from the Tipperary County Board read.

"Lar's importance and value to the Tipperary senior hurling team is immeasurable and the door will remain open to him for a return to the panel if those work pressures ease."

Although he has called time on his inter-county career, Corbett intends to continue playing for Thurles Sarsfields.

During a glittering career Corbett won two All-Ireland titles, four Munster titles and was named on the All-Star team three times
