Redknapp: My focus is Tottenham

by Michelle Fortune , 09 February 2012

Harry Redknapp may be the overwhelming favourite to succeed Fabio Capello as England manager but he insists he has not even thought about the possibility as he is fully focused on Tottenham.

Just a day after being cleared of tax evasion Redknapp was greeted by reports outside his house to answer questions on whether or not he was in the frame to become the new manager of England.

Redknapp has been the bookies favourite ever since Capello signalled his intention to step down after Euro 2012, but his shock resignation on Wednesday night has left the FA with a headache given Redknapp's commitment to Tottenham.

When pressed on the issue by reporters, Redknapp said: "I've never thought about it [the England job]. They [the FA] will make whatever decision they want to make and hopefully be right for the country. Tottenham have been fantastic.

"It wouldn't be right to focus on anything else other than Tottenham."

It has been suggested Redknapp could take up the position on a part-time basis until after Euro 2012 but the Tottenham boss insists he is committed to the White Hart Lane club.

"I've not even thought about it. I've got a job to do. I've got a big game on Saturday for Tottenham. Tottenham is my focus," he added.

"Tottenham have been fantastic to me. The fans last week at the Wigan game...it was incredible the reception they gave me.

"It wouldn't be right for them, (for me) to focus on anything else but Tottenham. That's my only interest, is Tottenham Hotspur."

Capello met with FA chiefs on Wednesday to discuss the decision to strip John Terry of the England captaincy and after several hours of talks the Italian tendered his resignation, which was accepted without hesitation.

"I was shocked. I was surprised. I didn't expect that to happen," Redknapp said of Capello's resignation.

"We knew he was going to leave in the summer. I didn't expect it to happen now."
