Orchard reap Tralee rewards

by Oli Skehan , 11 February 2012

Both Kerry and Armagh finished with just 14 players on Saturday night but it was the Orchard County who came away with the spoils from Austin Stack Park in Tralee, the Ulstermen running out deserving 2-8 to 0-10 winners in Division One of the Allianz Football League.

With the game slipping away from the hosts Tomas O Se saw red in the final quarter for kneeing an opposing player in the midriff and Finnian Moriarty followed the An Gaeltacht clubman not long after a cynical foul on James O'Donoghue.

After a low-scoring first-half the Orchard County held the advantage at the interval with the highlight a Brian Mallon goal - the man from Portadown finished off a lovely move by planting the ball in the bottom of the net.

The second-half was in its infancy when a high ball went into the Kerry goalmouth, a mix-up between O Se and 'keeper Brendan Kealy allowed John Kingham to flick the ball to the net and a shock was on the cards.

That shock duly came to pass despite the best efforts of Bryan Sheehan, Declan O'Sullivan and the aforementioned O'Donoghue with substitute Colm Waters confirming Armagh's victory with an exquisite late point.

Earlier in the night the other Division One clash between Mayo and Dublin in Castlebar was abandoned at half-time (the All-Ireland champions were leading by three points - 0-8 to 0-5 - due to heavy fog at McHale Park.
