Redknapp wants Scholes Euros return

by Setanta Staff , 13 February 2012 football news

Harry Redknapp believes veteran Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes should be included in England's Euro 2012 squad.

Redknapp, who is favourite to take the England job after Fabio Capello resigned last week, has likened the 37-year-old to Barcelona and Spain pair Xavi and Andres Iniesta.

"You'd love to have Paul Scholes in the Euros," the Tottenham boss said.

"He'd be in your team, he's that good. He plays like a Spaniard, he can play like Xavi and Iniesta. He doesn't give the ball away."

Scholes hasn't played for the Three Lions since retiring from international football after Euro 2004 at the age of 29, saying he felt it was the right time to quit England for himself and his family.

The midfielder had retired from club football at the end of last season, but made a shock return to the United squad in January after a request from Sir Alex Ferguson.

Scholes, who has 14 goals from 66 caps, played in the 1998 and 2002 World Cups as well as the European Championships in 2000 and 2004, and impressed again in a United shirt at the weekend when he played 90 minutes in the 2-1 win over Liverpool.
