Young takes up Wasps role

by Michelle Fortune , 30 June 2011

Dai Young has been appointed London Wasps' new Director of Rugby.

Young had been linked with the Aviva Premiership side for some time and last week was reported to have left Cardiff Blues after nine years.

Although the Welsh club denied the reports, Young has signed a four-year deal to take over at Adams Park with the 43-year-old set take up the position at the start of July.

“We are delighted to welcome Dai to London Wasps and we believe he is exactly the right person to take the club forward," Wasps Chief Executive Chris Thomas said.

"Dai brings a wealth of experience to the club and this is an appointment for the long-term. We remain an ambitious club and want to be competing at the highest level.

"Dai is the person to help us achieve these ambitions. Dai has done a sterling job in Cardiff, developing a host of young talent into international quality players as well as building an excellent team with strong spirit.

"We were hugely impressed with his vision for London Wasps which is in keeping with our key objective of developing sustained long-term success."

The 2007 Heineken Cup winners have suffered a dip in form in recent seasons and he has been tasked with reviving the fortunes of the London club.

"This is an enormous opportunity for me. I have loved my time with Cardiff but I am looking forward to a new experience in a new environment," the former British and Irish Lion prop forward, won 51 caps for Wales between 1987 and 2001, said.

"There is a hugely talented group of players here to work with and the challenge to help get a great club into a position where they are once again challenging for success was too good to turn down."

Wasps parted company with Tony Hanks in February and placed Leon Holden in temporary charge.
