The Rugby Championship is an International rugby union competition that is contested each year by Australia, Argentina, New Zealand and South Africa. These four teams have dominated the international rankings and The Rugby Championship is considered to be the toughest rugby competition in the world.
This is the inaugural year of The Rugby Championship which replaces the Tri-Nations. The new name ‘The Rugby Championship’ reflects the claim that this is the ultimate rugby contest as it features the teams that have won six of the seven Rugby World Cups.
The games between Australia and New Zealand also go towards determining the winner of the Bledisloe Cup. The Freedom Cup is contested by New Zealand and South Africa, and the Mandela Challenge Plate between Australia and South Africa.
In 2012 The Rugby Championship will be contested over 8 weeks, from the 18th August, 2012 to 6th October, 2012.
